Brose honors specialists for plastics technology

In November, Thomas Cramer from the RWTH Aachen (left) and Dr. Thomas Hofer from the University of Stuttgart (center) were awarded the Brose Prize by Executive Vice-President Thomas Spangler for the development of new procedures and technologies in the processing of plastics.

Coburg/Fürth (December 7, 2007). Dipl. Ing. Thomas Cramer from the RWTH Aachen und Dr.-Ing. Thomas Hofer von the University of Stuttgart are the first two award winners of the Brose prize which the company has donated within the scope of its collaboration with the plastics research group (WAK) whose aim is to develop new processes and technologies for working with plastics.

During the WAK conference “Assembly Injection Molding“, both of the specialists were presented with the awards totaling 9,000 euros by Brose board member, Thomas Spangler.

The research group, whose members include 22 of the most renowned German professors working in the field of plastics, annually awards six prizes in three different subject fields; one of the two prizes per category goes to a diploma thesis student and the other to a PhD scholar.

“By awarding the Brose prize, we aim to make students of science aware of just how interesting this sphere of plastics technology can be. We also wish to emphasize that here is an area which allows engineers to be extremely creative, since this material provides ample opportunity for design and application. Moreover, this commitment underlines the fact that plastics specialists can find exciting tasks and take on responsibility fast in our rapidly growing company,” said Thomas Spangler, who is responsible for worldwide production in the Brose Group, during the award ceremony.

Brose’s aim, as a prize donor, is to maintain close contact with the specialists in the WAK research group, to make the company better know in this specialist field of activity and to meet promising young talents from the group of university graduates. The next WAK conference will take place in mid-2008 at Brose in Coburg.

Plastic is a material, which is playing an increasingly important role in the area of car doors and gaining equally great significance in the production of Brose products. While developing new door system concepts meeting the individual needs of the customers, the company is also poised to increase its expertise by producing plastic functional carriers in-house.

Within the scope of a customer project, there will be first-time in-house production of functional carriers made of plastic at Brose’s plant in Hallstadt, beginning in 2008.
